I'm trying to make the status bar transparent

As the title says, I'm trying to make my status bar, like where the time, battery and other info is shown transparent. I can't seem to pull it off

By going to the desktop settings (long tap, settings, desktop) then system bars, you would be able to change both the status bar color to transparent (so that the wallpaper is shown) and even enable the overlap so that the desktop itself can be seen behind it.

Is this not working?
